Visit to Tunis

Belgium’s Minister for Pensions Daniel Bacquelaine represented the Belgian government in Tunis, thereby showing the government’s attachment to democracy and democratic values

Prime Minister Charles Michel asked the Minister for Pensions Daniel Bacquelaine to represent the Belgian government and show its solidarity with the people of Tunisia.

During his visit to Tunis on Sunday 29th March Minister Daniel Bacquelaine laid a wreath at the monument in commemoration of the victims of the terrorist attack on the Bardo museum. It was also stressed that this attack had cost the life of a Belgian national, Hilda Van Nerum.

Subsequently he attended the republican march taking place in the city.

Everyone longs for freedom and fundamental values. Therefore, everyone longs for democracy. The battle for democracy is universal and we must strengthen democracy everywhere. Here, in Tunisia, at the time a democratically elected government comes to power, it is of paramount importance to be present and condemn terrorism in the strongest possible terms; ‘no’ and ‘enough’. All those wishing to halt democracy in its course must be stopped, Minister Bacquelaine said.
